Thursday, December 3, 2009 at 10:32PM In 1971 John Lennon imagined a world without heaven, without countries, a brotherhood of man sharing all the world. In 2009 we are a long way from such a world, but on a drizzly early summer day dozens of Hobartians marched because they too can imagine John Lennon's world.
Amnesty's annual Human Rights march was held in Hobart on 4 December. Despite the threatening drizzle there was a solid turnout and rainbows of colour.
People came along with all sorts of messages about areas in which human rights are being trampled on or are not being protected strongly enough. Sexuality, indigenous equality and refugees were just some of the groups and issues respresented.
The traffic was stopped as we marched up Liverpool Street, down Murray and onto Parliament lawns. People travelled in buggies and on foot, and it was good to see that the march wasn't speciesist.
On Parliament's lawns we heard how far the world had travelled, and how far there was still to go when it comes to achieving human rights for all. By the end of the talking, it was clear that peace and love was the way to go!
Thanks Amnesty for organising the march and good on everyone who braved the weather to turn up!
