40 to 40
Tuesday, May 10, 2011 Now, I'm not one to obsess about birthdays, but this year is different. Yup, in 40 days I'll be 40. On the morning of 18 June I'll officially be in the second half of my life. Living in Australia, I might expect to live another 44 years beyond 40. If I lived in Somalia I'd be doing well to live for another 9 years. If I lived in Swaziland, there'd be a good chance I wouldn't even make my 40th birthday - life exectancy for women in that country is 39.
So at this point in my life I feel very grateful for many things, including the good fortune that saw me born in a prosperous country, to middle class parents who loved and cared for me, and who were able to provide me with all of my material needs, and then some.
I rather like the idea of 'turning 40' into a little project, so for the next 40 days I am going to take a photo a day of myself and post it here. By the day I turn 40, I am sure I will be so sick of seeing myself that I won't need another photo of it for the next 40 years!
