On Friday 5 March the Tasmanian Electoral Commission conducted a draw to determine in which order candidates appear on the ballot paper on 20 March.
We had all worked hard to ensure that, with 100 nominators, Andrew was included as a 'Grouped Independent' which means he was in the draw to be listed in the first section of the ballot paper, alongside the parties. This gives a tremendous advantage to an Independent. And all parties hope to be drawn for the coveted first column on the ballot, a position which is believed to be advantageous for picking up the 'donkey vote' - people who simply number the boxes left to right across the paper.
After an impressive and fairly elaborate set-up, little blue balls containing the names of those eligible were rattled around the ballot box and then drawn, one by one. The first name to be drawn - and so the first name to appear on the ballot paper - was Andrew Wilkie! The local newspaper journalist standing behind let out a whistle. "Hm, that'll have an impact," was clearly the meaning.
So. We have all of the ducks lined up. First position on the ballot. A 12-year old Labor Government truly on the nose with even hard-core Labor voters. A Liberal alternative which is not a real alternative in the minds of many. The Greens who cannot win a majority of seats and so form government. And nearly a quarter of the electorate still undecided about how they will vote.
Andrew's chances are still a long shot. It has been a long time since an independent was elected to the lower house in Tasmania - since they reduced the size of the Parliament from 35 to 25 in 1998. But if ever there was a chance it is now. Good luck Andrew! We are doing our best to support you.

Campaign update

Andrew Wilkie
Independent Candidate for Denison
Campaign Bulletin March 2010
www.andrewwilkie.org

Welcome to the early March report on Andrew Wilkie's independent candidature for the seat of Denison at the State election on 20 March. You've received this email because you're either a supporter of Andrew's campaign or might have a particular interest in it. I'll send another bulletin out closer to the election, but if you don't want to receive it please reply to me (Kate Burton, Andrew's wife).

As this is election month there are a few things we'd like to remind you about.

1. Letterboxing
For those of you who have volunteered to deliver leaflets, they are now ready to be picked up from Rugs & Kilims (208 Elizabeth Street North Hobart) for delivery to people's letterboxes. We have maps with the relevant streets highlighted so you know where you need to go. It's good exercise and a very good cause so even if you haven't volunteered already let us know and we can assign you an area in Denison to letterbox. Thanks to everyone who has picked up leaflets already!

2. Fundraiser
This Friday 5 March a fundraiser will be held at the home of Jo Matthews. The details are:
Friday 5 March, 5 Francis St Battery Point
7pm til late, or until we receive an obscene amount in donations - whichever comes first
BYO drinks, some nibbles will be provided
A very deep hat will be passed around for Andrew's campaign so please come prepared to part with some cash or cheques (made out to 'Andrew Wilkie')
Everyone welcome, so please tell your friends.

3. The latest poll
In mid-February EMRS conducted a poll on voting intentions across Tasmania and in each individual seat. The results for Andrew were very encouraging. The percentage of voters intending to vote one for an independent in Denison was 6%. To put this in perspective, a poll in November last year had only 3% of voters intending to put an independent as number one. Also there was a high percentage (23%) of undecided voters, which means their votes still need to find a home. And the Greens polled 40% in Denison, which they are unlikely to receive in the real poll. Again some of these votes will go elsewhere, including to Andrew.

So what might this mean? A quota for the Lower House is 16.5%. We calculate that if Andrew can win half a quota (about 8%) in primary votes, he has a chance of being elected on preferences.

So we're getting there. Thanks to Andrew's hard work and your fantastic efforts in spreading the word and donating money Andrew is in with a small but real chance.

A lot depends on these last two weeks of the campaign. Please keep telling people you know about Andrew. Encourage them to email him or visit the shop to ask him questions if they're unsure about his position on a particular matter. Send a donation if you can. Put a sticker on your car or a poster in your front yard. It all helps.

Thank you again for your continued support. We know many of you have been active in spreading the word and we greatly appreciate your efforts. Remember, if every supporter persuades ten people to vote for Andrew then the chances of his success skyrocket!

If you have been forwarded this bulletin from a friend and would like to receive it directly, email us and we'll add you to the list.

If you need to contact Andrew or me email
wilkie.andrew@bigpond.com
burtonkm@bigpond.com
or phone 0400 818 625.

Authorised by Kate Burton 208 Elizabeth Street North Hobart 7000

Campaign update

Andrew Wilkie
Independent Candidate for Denison
Campaign Bulletin February 2010
www.andrewwilkie.org

Welcome to the February report on Andrew Wilkie's independent candidature for the seat of Denison at the State election on 20 March. You've received this email because you're either a supporter of Andrew's campaign or might have a particular interest in it. I'll send another bulletin out in March but if you don't want to receive it please reply to me (Kate Burton, Andrew's wife).

The election was announced on Friday 12 February so there are only five weeks to go. Andrew is well-positioned because he launched his campaign in March last year and we feel he's made a big splash since that time. He has had very good feedback from across the political spectrum and we think that he is genuinely in the race.

Policy and Media
Andrew has had a big win in recent days with the Greens buckling to the pressure of his anti-pokies stand and announcing a policy of abolishing all poker machines in the State in five years. Previously they advocated banning pokies from pubs and clubs but would have allowed the continued operation of poker machines in the casinos, which would have seen the majority of the pokies problem in Tasmania remain unresolved. The casinos take about half of the State’s pokies grab and this would have increased substantially if problem gamblers were steered there by the removal of pokies only from pubs and clubs.

The new Greens policy appears to match Andrew's, however there is an important difference. Whereas the Greens want to make the change in 5 years and are prepared to tear up the contract between the State and the Federal Group to do it, Andrew believes that the contract should be allowed to run its course before the machines are abolished. This recognises the importance of honouring contracts (however misconceived) and as importantly gives the industry and the Government ample time to make the transition between very different commercial and revenue environments.

In the last week Andrew was reported in the Mercury regarding his support for the Tasmanian Constitution Society. The aim of the Society is to restore the House of Assembly (the lower house) to 35 members, from its current 25 members. This was one of Andrew's founding policies.

On Saturday 13 February the Mercury reported Andrew as one of 'The Ones to Watch' in the election. His anti-pokies stand, previous campaigns including against John Howard, and senior army background clearly demonstrate that he is a man of substance and experience who would bring excellent skills to the Parliament.

Leaflets
Thanks to everyone who has volunteered to deliver leaflets in March. We need more volunteers though! If you haven't already told us that you'd like to help in this way here's what to do:
1. Let us know that you want to leaflet, and tell us if you prefer to deliver in a certain area (we will do our best to accommodate such requests but can't promise).
2. Between 26 February and 5 March pick up leaflets from our shop, Rugs and Kilims (208 Elizabeth St North Hobart), or ask us to drop them at your house.
3. Between 5-19 March deliver to letterboxes in your designated area.

Posters
Thank you also for those who have volunteered to have posters on your property. We have more posters for distribution, each 600 x 900mm. Let us know if you have a prominent position for one or more. They can be picked up from Rugs and Kilims. You can probably put them up yourself but please let us know if you need help.

**We have an Andrew Wilkie banner, 3m x 1.25m, which needs a home. Please let us know if you have a high-profile position for this.**

Stickers
We now have 'Andrew Wilkie' bumper stickers! If you want one or more (to give to friends or distribute somehow - please make sure it is legal and ethical) they can be picked up at Rugs and Kilims.

Donations
Thank you to everyone who has generously pitched in money to help with the campaign. But we're still well short of the thousands of dollars we need to keep Andrew's profile, and therefore chances, at a competitive level and we would be very grateful for more donations. A single bumper sticker costs more than 50 cents; an election poster costs $9; a billboard for a month $600; and a reasonably-sized newspaper advertisement well over $1000.

Campaign update

Andrew Wilkie
Independent Candidate for Denison
Campaign Bulletin January 2010
www.andrewwilkie.org

Welcome to the January report on Andrew Wilkie's independent candidature for the seat of Denison at the State election expected on 20 March. You've received this email because you're either a supporter of Andrew's campaign or might have a particular interest in it. I'm sending these bulletins out every month, but if you don't want to receive them please reply to me (Kate Burton, Andrew's wife).

Over the Christmas/New Year period we've taken a break from campaigning. We're now back, with just two months to go to the election.

We're pleased to report that Andrew finished 2009 as a visible and credible candidate. Media interviews, press stories, the Van of Numbers (keeping a count of losses on the pokies), billboards, tens of thousands of leaflets, letters to the editor and your word of mouth helped to achieve this.

The Labor Government is throwing money around like drunken sailors and there is no shortage of promises from the other two big parties. The electorate isn't stupid and the result is likely to be close. The challenge for Andrew is to stay in the race - he could well be central to deciding who governs Tasmania after the election. It's time to lock in some crucial help.

Leaflets
There'll be another delivery of leaflets to every home in the electorate towards the end of the campaign. Australia Post will deliver some of these. But we need volunteers to spend a day or two in March putting leaflets in letterboxes to cover the remainder. Many of you have already offered to help but we need you to recommit - and new people to put up their hands. The plan at this stage is for people to pick up leaflets from our shop, Rugs and Kilims (208 Elizabeth St North Hobart), or have them dropped at their home, between 26 February and 5 March for delivery to letterboxes during the fortnight 5-19 March. Please reply to this email if you can help, even if you have contacted us previously.

Posters
We have about 200 posters for distribution, each 600 x 900mm. We need sites - front yards and fences - in high-profile locations to display them. Again, even if you have contacted us about this previously please let us know if you are still able to put up a poster. Posters can be picked up from Rugs and Kilims. Most people will be able to put up the posters themselves, for instance tied/screwed to their fence or a timber stake. But if you need help please let us know and we'll do it for you.

Please note that Hobart City Council regulations restrict the period in which election posters can be displayed to one month, so it's best for homes in the Hobart City Council area to put their posters up only after the election is called. Glenorchy City Council allows three months so posters there can go up as soon as you receive them.

Stickers
One thousand 'Andrew Wilkie' bumper stickers will be available for distribution by Saturday 30 January. If you want one or more (to give to friends or distribute somehow - please make sure it is legal and ethical!) they can be picked up at Rugs and Kilims.

If for some reason you can't pick up leaflets, posters or stickers please let us know and we can deliver them to you.

Donations
Thank you to everyone who has generously pitched in money to help with the campaign. But we're still well short of the thousands of dollars we need to keep Andrew's profile, and therefore chances, at a competitive level and we would be very grateful for more donations. For example, a single bumper sticker costs more than 50 cents. An election poster costs $9. You've received this email because you're either a supporter of Andrew's campaign or might have a particular interest in it. I'm sending these bulletins out every month, but if you don't want to receive them please reply to me (Kate Burton, Andrew's wife).

Media and events
Andrew has been busy since the last newsletter. Many of you would have seen the documentary 'The perfect whisetleblower' screened on SBS on 18 November. The program generated a strong and supportive response. If you'd like to see it please let us know and we can lend you our copy. Andrew also conducted a lengthy radio interview on Ultra 106.5 FM about the issues raised in the documentary.

The fundraiser at Smolt on 22 November was a big success. Thanks very much to Greg Barns, who introduced the event, and to Jo Matthews who organised it.

Andrew attended the Tasmanians for a Healthy Democracy forum on power-sharing on 24 November. He also addressed the TASCOSS multicultural issues forum on 26 November and attended TASCOSS's election debate on 1 December.

Andrew has been involved in the problems being experienced by two Salamanca Arts Centre tenants and this was recognised in an article in The Mercury on 4 December.

On 6 December Andrew was interviewed on local ABC radio regarding telling the truth.

An opinion piece written by Andrew on Afghanistan was published in The Examiner on 11 December. This is available at http://tasmaniantimes.com/index.php?/weblog/article/the-dreadful-dilemma-of-afghanistan/

How you can help
The campaign needs quite a bit more money to ensure Andrew maintains a strong profile. Billboards, leaflets, newspaper advertising and the like are unbelievably expensive. So if you can help with a donation please contact us.

'Kitchen cabinets' are a great way to let your friends and acquaintances know about Andrew and what he stands for. Just invite people you know to your house to meet Andrew over a drink/dinner/bbq - and pass the hat around to raise money for the campaign.

Letterboxing is another effective way of getting Andrew's message out there. If you enjoy stretching your legs and would like to deliver Andrew's election leaflets please let us know.

If you have nomination forms please return them to the shop (Rugs & Kilims, 208 Elizabeth Street North Hobart). Don't worry if they aren't complete - we will have have enough names to ensure Andrew appears as a 'Grouped Independent' on the ballot paper. Thanks to everyone who has collected signatures!

We now have election posters available to be put up in people's front yards and other sites. Please contact us if you think you have a site which will ensure Andrew's poster is seen by as many people as possible.

One of the easiest ways you can give the campaign a boost is to spread the word - tell your friends, family and colleagues about Andrew and the campaign, and feel free to forward this email. And drop into the shop to pick up a bundle of leaflets to hand to your friends and acquaintances.

Thank you for your support. We hope you all have a safe and happy festive season.

If you have been forwarded this bulletin from a friend and would like to receive it directly, email us and we'll add you to the list.

If you need to contact Andrew or me email
wilkie.andrew@bigpond.com
burtonkm@bigpond.com
or phone 0400 818 625.

Smolt

Their message was well-received, and over drinks and nibbles Andrew was able to talk in more detail to supporters. More fundraisers will be held between now and the election. Thanks to everyone who donated their time and money to make a successful event!

Campaign Update November 2009

Welcome to the November report on Andrew Wilkie's independent candidature for the seat of Denison at the State election expected in March 2010. You've received this email because you're either a supporter of Andrew's campaign or might have a particular interest in it. I'm sending these bulletins out every month, but if you don't want to receive them please reply to me (Kate Burton, Andrew's wife).

Policy
During the last month some important public policy issues have been on the boil. Andrew's position is as follows.

Water and sewerage reform
"The Tasmanian Labor Government has bungled the implementation of water and sewerage reform. The anomalies and inequities in the reform need to be addressed. The 10% cap on price increases must be enforced. And subsidies for people on low incomes need to be increased to offset any price rises."

Voluntary euthanasia
"I would have voted in favour of the 'Dying with Dignity' Bill last week because I believe strongly in voluntary euthanasia so long as it is strictly regulated. Any fine tuning of the proposed legislation would have been done during the committee process if the bill had received majority support in Parliament, which unfortunately it didn't."

Publicity
Since the October newsletter Andrew has had some good media coverage. He was a guest on ABC Radio Tim Cox's Friday Forum on 23 October.

A Letter to the Editor of the Mercury from Andrew regarding poker machines was published on 31 October. The unedited content was:

"The Mercury has again highlighted the terrible harm done by poker machines in Tasmania and raised the issue of whether or not governments have the right to ban them ('The liberty of losers', Mercury, October 30).

But the newspaper gives too much credit when it says our politicians are starting to listen. This week's much hyped draft pokies legislation is a tinkering around the edges of the problem, aimed simply at neutralising the issue politically in the run-up to the election.

Look at the facts. The Government did virtually nothing about the Productivity Commission's report into problem gambling in 1999 or the Social and Economic Impact Study into Gambling in Tasmania prepared in 2008. Nor does it intend to implement most of the Tasmanian Gaming Commission's 2008 recommendations aimed at reducing problem gambling. Meanwhile, Budget Estimates show increasing State revenue from the pokies in future years.

For the record, Labor, Liberal and Greens all support the continued operation of poker machines in Tasmania. All are letting us down on this issue."

Another Letter to the Editor of the Mercury, this time on the pulp mill, was published on 5 November. The unedited content was:

"The State Labor Government continues to bend over backwards to support Gunns' Tamar River pulp mill and the Liberal Opposition is no better. Mark my words, if I'm elected to the Parliament I will be the next Government's worst nightmare on this issue."

Events
On Sunday 15 November Andrew participated in the commemoration of the 8th anniversary of the tragic sinking of SIEV-X with the loss of all of those on board - 353 asylum seekers en route to Australia.

51,000 leaflets were distributed to letterboxes in Denison during the week of 9-13 November. These have stimulated very positive feedback on Andrew's campaign.

With the election coming closer there are more opportunities for Andrew to attend policy forums to listen to people's ideas and concerns and to present his views. Recently he attended the TASCOSS-sponsored public transport forum in Glenorchy on 3 November. And on 26 November Andrew will attend another TASCOSS event on multicultural issues in Tasmania.

The SBS documentary about Andrew's 2003 controversial resignation from the Office of National Assessments about the war in Iraq will screen at 8.30pm on Wednesday 18 November. The program is called "The Perfect Whistleblower" and is being rated by the newspapers as a "must-see".

Please don't forget the fundraiser for Andrew's campaign at Smolt, in Salamanca, on Sunday 22 November. The event starts at 2.30pm and will be introduced by Greg Barns. Cost is $30 a head which includes drinks, nibbles and a small donation to Andrew's campaign.
Welcome to the October report on Andrew Wilkie's independent candidature for the seat of Denison at the State election expected in March 2010. You've received this email because you're either a supporter of Andrew's campaign or might have a particular interest in it. I'm sending these bulletins out every month, but if you don't want to receive them please reply to me (Kate Burton, Andrew's wife).

Policies and positions

In the last week more controversy over the 'Tasmania Tomorrow' education debacle has emerged. Andrew's position on the so-called reforms is this:

'The Tasmania Tomorrow education reform has been ill-conceived and badly implemented. It is good to look for ways to improve things, but such reform must be based on expert advice and not the whim of grandstanding politicians. The reform should be stopped and experts - including teachers - appointed to sort out the mess.'

Publicity

You might have noticed the Van of Numbers cruising the streets - there's a good chance that you or someone you know has spotted it. And Andrew's billboards have moved - the 'Pokies destroy lives' billboard from New Town to Rosetta, and the billboard stating that the Government is 'Bungling, dishonest and uncaring' from North Hobart to New Town.

Andrew strongly reaffirmed his opposition to Gunns' Tamar River pulp mill in a speech read on his behalf at the anti-pulp mill rally at Beaconsfield on Sunday 4 October. Hopefully this will help to counter the disinformation being spread in some Greens circles about his stance on the pulp mill. Andrew also had a letter published in The Mercury on Sunday 11 October about the costs of political campaigns. The text of both can be read here: www.katemburton.com/campaign-2010/

On 18 November SBS is expected to screen a documentary about Andrew's 2003 public resignation from the Office of National Assessments as a whistleblower over Iraq. For anyone interested in Andrew's behind-the-scenes story this doco is a must-watch! The screening date is to be confirmed but we'll let you know if it changes.

What you can do to help

We are still after more volunteers to hold Kitchen Cabinets to raise money. A Kitchen Cabinet is a fun way to let people know about Andrew's campaign. Just invite people you know to your house to meet Andrew over a drink/dinner/bbq and pass the hat around.

Thank you to everyone who is working hard to collect nominations to ensure Andrew appears as a Grouped Independent on the ballot paper. This important part of the campaign is going well and it is certain that Andrew will have his own column alongside the major parties - a crucial prerequisite for a chance of success. Please return your sheets to Andrew as soon as you can. We will keep collecting signatures though because we need more than 100 names to have a safe buffer in case some people end up being ineligible as nominators (eg they're not enrolled to vote in Denison).

You can boost the campaign in others ways too. Simply spread the word - tell your friends, family and colleagues about Andrew and the campaign, and feel free to forward this email. And drop into the shop to pick up a bundle of campaign leaflets to give your friends and acquaintances. Posters will be available before too long so please let us know if you want one for your front fence.

Finally, keep an eye on Andrew's website which will keep you updated on his policy statements.

Last Sunday’s article regarding the soaring cost of political campaigning (“Political wannabes paying for privilege”, Sunday Tasmanian, October 4) provided a valuable insight into the way in which elections have become less about leadership and ideas, and more about how the three political parties buy popularity by throwing money at their campaign.

This might be fine for the Labor, Liberal and Greens parties, all of which have deep pockets and a vested interest in being allowed to campaign as they choose. But it’s not fine with voters who are sick of over-the-top election campaigns, cynical of politicians and suspicious of the degree to which donations might purchase political patronage. Nor is it fine for independent candidates who campaign on a shoestring and struggle to be heard over the Labor/Liberal/Greens media onslaught.

It’s quite remarkable that given their support for a review of spending, none of the political parties were willing to put a figure on an expenditure cap. Equally remarkable was the claim in the article by one candidate that he’s worn out three pairs of shoes during two months of part-time doorknocking. No wonder voters are cynical. Perhaps he just needs a decent pair of shoes.

A message from Independent candidate for Denison Andrew Wilkie

I oppose this pulp mill - I always have and I always will - because it is not pollution free, it is not water and energy efficient, it is not sustainably supplied, it is not located where the locals want it and it was not assessed by a process we can trust.

I remain appalled by the stench in the air from the corruption about this project. Corruption in that the Lennon/Bartlett Governments lack the inherent integrity to govern in the public interest; prepared instead to bully, deceive and abandon proper process in the pursuit of their misguided goals.

The Bartlett Government simply doesn’t understand the meaning of the term ‘good governance’. Some of the key players don’t even seem to understand the value of the appearance of good governance.

This issue is about right and wrong and about the importance of putting the public interest in Tasmania ahead of a handful of commercial interests. After all no company, regardless of its size or the weight of its political patronage, has any right to jeopardise our economic, social or environmental future.

The heroes of campaigns past have shown us what can be achieved by ordinary people prepared to stand up to power for what is right, regardless of the odds. This time around we share the power to vote down the majority rule of the Bartlett Government and to replace it with a new Parliament prepared to seize the moment and overturn all approvals for this stinking mill.
